Every winter, Sapporo — the capital of Hokkaido — transforms into a snowy dreamland, and nothing captures that magic quite like the Sapporo Snow Festival (Sapporo Yuki Matsuri). In 2026, this iconic event returns with even more ice, snow, and excitement!
Festival Dates
February 4 (Wednesday) – February 11 (Wednesday, National Holiday), 2026
This 8 day festival draws visitors from all over Japan and the world to experience giant snow sculptures, dazzling illuminations, family fun, and Hokkaido winter culture.
The heart of the festival is Odori Park, where massive snow sculptures line up over a 1.5 kilometer stretch from Odori 1 chome to Odori 12 chome. These incredible creations — some over 15 meters tall — are carved by artists and teams from around the world.
At night, they’re beautifully illuminated until around 10 PM, making for breathtaking winter photos.
In Sapporo’s lively entertainment district, Susukino becomes an ice sculpture paradise! Over 60 ice sculptures — carved with fine detail — line the streets. These works glow under colored lights, creating a magical nighttime atmosphere perfect for romantic walks or nighttime photo ops.
If you’re traveling with family or just love playful winter fun, the Tsudome venue is perfect. Located at the Sapporo City Sports Exchange facility, you’ll find :
Giant snow slides
Snowball arenas
Interactive snowy play areas
Indoor rest zones and food booths
This spot is especially popular with kids and families — think snow adventures beyond just viewing sculptures!
Winter in Sapporo means comfort food galore! Around the festival venues, you can enjoy local favorites like :
Miso ramen – rich and warm, perfect against the cold
Fresh Hokkaido seafood – crab legs, scallops, and uni
Grilled snacks & hot drinks – perfect for festival strolls
Dress warmly : February temperatures in Sapporo can go well below freezing — bring layers, gloves, and waterproof boots.
Plan for crowds : Early mornings or weekdays are slightly quieter for photos.
Use Subway : The Odori, Susukino, and Tsudome sites are all reachable by Sapporo’s subway system.
Cash is handy : Many food stalls and vendors prefer cash.
The Sapporo Snow Festival is more than just an event — it’s an experience of winter art, culture, community, and joy. Whether you’re exploring giant snow statues, taking nighttime photos under sparkling lights, or sipping warm ramen between exhibits, this festival offers memories you won’t forget.
If you want a truly magical experience, visit during the evening illuminations at Odori and Susukino — when the sculptures light up and the festival feels like a snowy fairytale!
