Winter in Japan can be a magical time—festivals, snowy landscapes, cozy cafes—but it’s also the peak period for cold and flu season. As temperatures drop and humidity falls, viruses that cause colds and influenza spread more easily. With crowds in trains, busy workplaces, and school environments, many people are now feeling the effects of the season. That’s why it’s important to take proactive steps to stay healthy and avoid sickness this winter.
Here’s your simple and effective guide to staying well as the cold season continues!
During winter months :
Viruses like the flu and common cold spread more easily in dry, cold air.
People spend more time indoors with others, increasing transmission risk.
Low humidity dries out our nasal passages, lowering our natural defenses.
Medical experts in Japan and worldwide note that cold and influenza cases usually peak in January and February, so now is the time to reinforce your defenses.

Wash your hands with soap and water after going outside, before eating, and after using public places. This helps remove germs you may have picked up during the day.
Trains, offices, and shopping centers can be crowded, especially in winter. Wearing a mask helps reduce the risk of catching or spreading viruses.
Keeping your body warm is important during cold weather. Wear layers and protect your neck, hands, and feet to help your body stay strong.
Good sleep helps your immune system fight infections. Try to get 7–8 hours of rest each night, especially during busy winter days.
Warm meals like soup, miso soup, or hot pot provide energy and nutrients while helping maintain body temperature.
Take warm baths to relax muscles and enhance circulation—but dry off and dress warmly immediately afterward.
Consider a seasonal flu vaccination if available—it’s one of the best defenses against influenza.
Listen to your body : if you start feeling unwell, rest and stay home rather than pushing yourself too hard.
Winter shouldn’t be a season of sniffles and missed days. With a few intentional habits—good hygiene, warmth, hydration, sleep, and nutrition, you can significantly lower your chances of catching a cold or the flu.
Staying healthy not only protects you but also the people around you, especially in densely populated cities where infections can spread fast.
Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the beautiful season!
